Holiday Hike at Peaceful Springs – December 13, 2025
Step into the holiday season with a special guided hike at Peaceful Springs, a beautiful part of Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge not normally open to the public! This is your chance to explore private tracts set aside exclusively for native plants and wildlife, available only through our guided hike program. Don your Santa hat, reindeer ears, or just bring your jolly holiday spirit as we explore this rare part of the Refuge together.
Stroll along scenic trails at a moderate pace, pausing along the way to learn about the refuge’s birds, plants, geology, history, and habitats. Enjoy stunning views, discover native wildlife, and see firsthand how the refuge’s conservation efforts protect Texas Hill Country ecosystems.
Who Should Join:
This hike is perfect for anyone curious about nature, eager to learn about the refuge, or looking for a peaceful outdoor adventure. Our knowledgeable hike leaders will share fascinating insights about plants, wildlife, and the ongoing work to preserve this special place.
What to Expect on the Trail:

The hike follows old 2-track ranch roads, with distance varying based on wildlife sightings and discussion stops.

The trail is mostly unshaded, moderately difficult, and features loose rocks and short steep slopes.

Along the way, enjoy long-range views and learn how the refuge has evolved over time to support native Texas Hill Country plants and wildlife.
Experience the beauty of the refuge this holiday season while learning, exploring, and connecting with nature in a private, unforgettable setting. These hiking tours move at a moderate place, with stops along the way to discuss the birds, plants, history, geology and habitats of the Refuge. We see many native plants and beautiful views along the way.
Meeting Location: Old Flying X Ranch across from Doeskin Ranch.

Facilities: Please note that since this is not a public trail, restrooms and drinking water are not available at the trailhead. Restrooms are available across the road at Doeskin Ranch Trailhead.
Equipment: As always, wear appropriate shoes, bring plenty of water, bug spray, and sunscreen. Due to slippery rocks on the trail, hiking poles are also highly recommended.
Group Size: Sign up today. Registration is limited to 25 participants for this hike.

Participant Cancellations: Our hikes often have a wait list, if you need to cancel, we ask that you try to, at least 48 hours in advance so that a wait-list participant is notified in adequate time!
