Description

Special First Day Hike – January 1, 2026
Start the New Year with an unforgettable adventure!

Kick off 2026 with a behind-the-scenes exploration of Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge on our 7-mile Igau Tract hike. This challenging trek takes you deep into Golden-cheeked Warbler habitat, over rolling hills, and to stunning viewpoints that few ever see.

Our guided hikes on non public tracts give you exclusive access to areas reserved for native plants and wildlife. As we move at a moderate pace, we’ll pause to discuss the refuge’s birds, plants, geology, history, and unique Hill Country habitats.

Who Should Join:
This difficult hike is best suited for adventurous hikers ready for 7 miles of old ranch roads, steep inclines, descents, and sections of loose rock. It’s perfect for those seeking both a physical challenge and the chance to explore hidden corners of the refuge.

What to Expect on the Trail:

  • Trek through juniper-oak forest, prime habitat for the Golden-cheeked Warbler.

  • Enjoy breathtaking views of the refuge and the surrounding Hill Country.

  • Learn about native plants, wildlife, and the geological features that make this area unique.

  • Guided stops along the way to share stories and insights about this special place.

By the end of this hike, you’ll have explored areas of the refuge that few ever see and welcomed the New Year fully immersed in nature, beauty, and adventure.
