Photography Hike: Light, Landscapes, and Textures in Nature (Eckhardt Tract)
Description
Photography Adventure Hike at Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge
Explore the rarely-accessible Eckhardt Tract!
Step into a part of Balcones Canyonlands NWR that’s normally closed to the public and discover a photographer’s dream landscape—towering vistas, hidden textures, and wildlife surprises around every bend. Whether you’re carrying a DSLR or just your smartphone, this relaxed, photo-friendly hike is designed to spark creativity and help you see the refuge in a brand new way.
Your guide, photographer Richard Gaines, will share fun, easy-to-try photography tips as we wander, pause, and capture the beauty around us. No experience needed—just curiosity and a love for nature. We’ll explore at a slow, thoughtful pace, giving everyone plenty of time to experiment with shots, ask questions, and enjoy the scenery.
Who should join?
Anyone who enjoys nature, wants to improve their photography skills, or simply loves an excuse to explore a spectacular wild place. Beginners are absolutely welcome—this is a supportive, no-pressure outing where we learn as we go.
What to expect:
We’ll hike about 2–2.5 miles. Bring only portable gear you’re comfortable carrying. (Pro tip: any camera works—even your phone!) Expect sunny, exposed stopping points, so a hat and sunscreen are your friends.
